As a self-taught artist, Luce's early works in pen and ink, etchings, and pencil placed emphasis on realistic rendering of form and perspective. In his current works, oil on canvas and oil on board, he uses that same practiced skill to convey realism and romance in his landscapes and floral subjects. Luce uses a transparent glazing technique to accomplish the vivid colors that characterize his oils, and builds intensity through careful layer upon layer, resulting in great depth of color and clarity in the subjects he paints.
